Gold trades cautiously bullish at $4,180 — price is holding above a tightly stacked moving-average cluster at $4,175–$4,179, and buyers keep defending the floor of the $4,170–$4,190 channel. A stronger-than-expected China data batch overnight did nothing to break that structure, and the thin US calendar leaves the channel edges as the main reference for the session.

Gold at $4,180: XAU/USD Eyes $4,190 as Canada CPI Looms

Key Levels

  • Bias: Cautiously Bullish above $4,170
  • Support: $4,175 → $4,170 → $4,164
  • Resistance: $4,186 → $4,190 → $4,198
  • Session target: $4,190 (conditional on a hold above $4,175 through the Canadian CPI release)
  • Invalidation: Below $4,164 = channel failure, opening the $4,157–$4,152 support block

Catalyst of the Day: Canada CPI

The Canadian CPI release is the session’s main volatility event. Gold has no direct link to Canadian inflation, but the print moves expectations for the Bank of Canada, which moves CAD, and CAD flows spill into the broader US dollar. Markets expect a 0.2% monthly gain after last month’s 0.1% drop, with median CPI at 2.0% and trimmed CPI at 1.9%. A hotter print trims BoC easing bets, lifts CAD and tends to take some pressure off the dollar, which helps gold. A soft print does the reverse and could push gold toward the lower half of the channel. The release lands at 15:30 (UTC+3). Watch whether the three-average cluster at $4,175–$4,179 holds on the first spike. The Bank of Canada Business Outlook Survey follows at 18:30 and can extend the move.

Fundamental Context

China delivered the day’s main data surprise. Third-quarter GDP grew 4.5% year on year against a 4.4% forecast, retail sales rose 1.1% against 0.5% expected, and industrial production came in at 5.5%. Unemployment eased to 5.2%. This matters for gold because China is the world’s largest physical gold market, and firmer consumption supports the physical-demand story that underpins dips. The property sector remains the weak spot: new home prices fell 0.14% month on month and fixed-asset investment is still down 7.2% year to date. That drag keeps hard assets attractive as a store of value for Chinese households, so the data supports gold without removing the reasons to hold it.

The rest of the Asian session was mixed. New Zealand’s trade deficit widened to NZ$1,971 million against a NZ$775 million forecast, a CAD-style dollar-bloc miss that gave the US dollar a small lift. Gold absorbed it without breaking $4,170, which shows how firm the bid is near the channel floor. Japan’s tertiary industry activity fell 0.1%, better than the 0.3% decline expected.

The only US release today is the NAHB Housing Market Index at 17:00 (UTC+3), forecast at 31 against 32 previously. A further slide would reinforce the rate-sensitivity narrative around housing, and softer US growth data generally pulls yields lower, which supports non-yielding gold. As Friday’s analysis outlined, gold entered the weekend positioned near $4,174 with $4,200 as the upside marker. Friday’s session tested $4,198 and stopped just short.

Chart Analysis

On the 15-minute chart, XAU/USD trades at $4,180.51, up $5.82 (+0.14%) on the day, with the latest candle closing at its high. The broader trend since the Thursday low near $4,131 remains upward, built on a staircase of higher lows at roughly $4,144, $4,155 and $4,157, with the overnight dip stopping near $4,166. Price sits above all three moving averages: the fast average at $4,178.6, the second at $4,177.4 and the slower average at $4,175.3. They are converging and flattening, which signals compression rather than momentum. The supply zone at $4,186–$4,192 has rejected price four times since Friday, including the $4,198 spike and two lower highs near $4,186 today. The demand block at $4,164–$4,171 has absorbed every pullback. The structure points to a coil, with rising lows pressing into capped highs, and an upside break looks the more likely resolution while the averages stay below price. The projected path runs toward $4,186, then the upper band near $4,190. The chart supports the supplied $4,170–$4,190 channel, with the demand block extending slightly lower to $4,164.

Bull / Bear Scenarios

  • Bull trigger: A 15-minute close above $4,186 with price holding above $4,175 → $4,190, then $4,198 on a clean break of the supply zone.
  • Bear trigger: A 15-minute close below $4,170 → $4,164. A close below $4,164 → $4,157, then $4,152.

Events Ahead

  • Mon 15:30 — Canada CPI m/m (0.2%): drives BoC expectations and CAD, with spillover into the dollar and gold.
  • Mon 15:30 — Canada Median CPI y/y (2.0%) and Trimmed CPI y/y (1.9%): the core read decides how hawkish the market treats the headline.
  • Mon 17:00 — US NAHB Housing Market Index (31): the session’s only US release, relevant for yields and the dollar.
  • Mon 18:30 — BoC Business Outlook Survey (no forecast): sets the tone for Canadian rate expectations into the Asian open.

All times are UTC+3. The actionable read for the session: while $4,175 holds, dips toward $4,170 stay buyable with $4,190 as the target. A 15-minute close below $4,164 cancels the setup.
